Consequently, businesses go to great lengths to protect their intellectual property and trade secrets. Of course, what some businesses consider to be trade secrets are not trade secrets at all. In certain cases, former employees who take information can find themselves facing federal charges with potentially significant penalties. Under the Economic Espionage Act, a conviction to these charges can bring up to 15 years in prison.
